Graeme Spence.
Name: Graeme Spence
Age: 26
Position: Bow
Nationality: Australia
Graeme Spence is the pioneer crew of the team, deciding with Torvar to put together a team to see how far they could take it back in 2005 after their first event together. The key characteristics of match racing such as the event supplied equipment, and prize money allowed them to manage and maintain their own sailing program. “We wouldn’t have had the resources to compete in any other discipline at the same level, but match racing is also a far more physical, intense and exciting form of racing than any other.”
Graeme competed in a number of sports at a high level including Australian Rules football, and water polo before shifting his focus solely onto sailing. He is now responsible for the sponsorship and fundraising of the team, along with being the team’s full time bowman. He completed a Business shortly before leaving Perth in June 2007 for the team’s first major European tour, and now has ambitions to take his sailing career all the way to the top.
“At the moment myself and the rest of MRT focused on securing our teams place on the world match racing tour. Winning the world tour is definitely a goal we are striving towards. Personally I see the America’s cup as the pinnacle of yacht racing. And as a career sailor I don’t believe I can reach my potential without joining a successful Cup team.”
